Erich Heinemann was born in Pougkeepsie, NY, and grew up in Brooklyn. He attended the School of Visual Arts and the Swain School of Design, earning his BFA degree in 1981. He continued on at Brooklyn College, CUNY, and attained his MFA in 1984. He currently lives in Hoboken, NJ.

Erich has been working primarily with oil pastel, in combination with alkyd oil paint, and in some cases colored pencil. He has recently attended a seminar on the “mische technique,” and is currently expanding his exploration of creative expression.

Erich has had a longtime interest in shamanism, and has been studying with a variety of teachers of the shamanic traditions of Peru and the Andes region of South America. In addition to painting, he works as a shamanic healer. Elements of his shamanic path have ended up being in his art as well.
“I am striving to create images that can touch the heart and awaken a sense of wonder in the viewer. I have always had a love of rich, vibrant color and organic form.”
